Organisational unit: Department
Our expertise covers a wide range of subjects in Hispanic, Latin American, Portuguese and Catalan culture and history, and we enjoy a high-profile reputation at national and international level for our teaching and research.
After English, Spanish is the most widely spoken of the world’s European languages and is the second language of the USA. Portuguese is the language of Brazil, Latin America’s largest country and an emerging global economy, as well as being spoken in five African countries and parts of Asia. Catalan is an important regional language spoken on the eastern coast of Spain. There are well-established exchange links with universities in Spain and Portugal, as well as with several universities in Latin America, giving a very cosmopolitan atmosphere to the Department.
