Organisation profile

The Centre is funded by UK charity The Scar Free Foundation with additional support from the Welsh Government Health and Care Research Wales and VTCT.

Our mission is to develop a UK research centre of world-leading excellence crossing clinical and academic boundaries for real patient benefit, to prevent burns and improve the outlook of children with burn injuries.

The Children’s Burns Research Centre is a multi-disciplinary consortium led by the University of Bristol in partnership with the University of the West of England, Cardiff University, University of Bath and University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust (UHBristol).

The Centre is based at the South West UK Children’s Burn Care Network at Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, and has an office at Cardiff University.

The research consortium has a track record of working together and has partnered with voluntary agencies and patient groups, with the aims of delivering a patient-centred research programme to provide measurable outcomes for real patient benefit, and developing multidisciplinary research capacity in burns research.

Professor Alan Emond, Professor of Child Health at the University of Bristol, is the Director of the Children's Burns Research Centre. He is a clinical academic paediatrician, experienced in leading multidisciplinary teams, with a track record in quantitative and qualitative research in child and adolescent injury.
