Research interests

My research interests focus on current issues in Catalan sociolinguistics. My doctoral work was concerned with language policy in the Catalan context, paying particular attention to the connections between policy and language contact phenomena. My current project (funded by the British Academy and the Leverhulme Trust's 'Small Research Grants' scheme) focuses on the link between the language attitudes and linguistic practices of bilingual French-Catalan speakers in and around the city of Perpignan, France. My forthcoming project (funded by the British Academy's 'Tackling the UK's International Challenges' scheme, pursued jointly with Dr Kristine Horner, University of Sheffield) examines the language attitudes of migrant workers in Andorra and Luxembourg towards the national languages of Catalan and Luxembourgish, as well as providing an in-depth analysis of the language policies of these two small nations. More widely, I am interested in issues facing multilingual urban speech communities, as well as the roles played by regional and minority languages in present-day Europe.
