Abstract

An annotated transcription of the privy seal warrant for John Cabot's pension of £20 per year, granted in December 1497 by King Henry VII, following Cabot's discovery voyage to North America. The transcription is accompanied by a 2,900-word introduction to the document and a photograph of the manuscript.

Henry VII, Horwood, J Other Identifier: TNA:PRO, C82/171, under date of 13 December The following conventions were employed when transcribing the document: the line spacing, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation follow the manuscript; reconstructions of suspensions are in italics; ‘u’ and ‘v’ have been rendered according to the document rather than to modern usage. Squared brackets indicate editorial additions. This transcription was undertaken as part of the ‘Cabot Project’ (University of Bristol, 2009-) funded by the British Academy (SG100194) and Gretchen Bauta, a private Canadian benefactor.
