Cyber security is often thought of as being a purely technical discipline, one comprised of specialised and technical digital tools, built and operated by highly trained engineers. In this panel we challenge this view by exploring emergent security environments - contexts within which purely technical approaches to security are no longer fully effective. Such environments cross organisational boundaries with disparate technical teams each trying to manage the security of their own systems, whilst those systems overlap and impact upon each other. When under attack cultural & training differences between teams can lead to mis-communication and mistakes. We explore the need for cross-disciplinary heroes to address increasingly complex and fast moving cyber security threats, by being able to bridge the technical / non-technical and communication divides. We also look to the need to harmonise security cultures within converged environments, and draw towards a just culture within which security mistakes are treated as opportunities for improving organisational procedure.
