Organisational unit: Research Theme

Organisation profile

The University of Bristol is internationally known for its gender research in the social sciences. The establishment of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Law research theme on gender has built on existing research strength in this area by encouraging a wide range of academics to engage with each other's work and the Gender research theme therefore works in a genuinely interdisciplinary way; bringing together researchers with different disciplinary backgrounds to address a common social issue.

The Gender theme brings together researchers and academics from the Sociology, Politics and International Studies, Geography, School for Policy Studies, Graduate School of Education, Management and Law within the Faculty, as well as Social and Community Medicine and Humanities, who currently research:

  • Domestic violence
  • Gender and poverty
  • Family and parenting
  • Political representation
  • Militarisation
  • Feminist geography and neo-liberalism
  • Gender and migration
  • Feminist theory
  • Technology and reproduction

The theme provides a positive and dynamic interdisciplinary research environment for staff researching gender, facilitates the development of networks in order both to support organic research bids and to respond to external funding calls, and develops and maintains links with external bodies and individuals interested in gender research, such as practitioners, activists and policy makers.
