My project focusses on the eruptive activity of Volcan de Fuego, an active stratovolcano in southern Guatemala. Fuego is very frequently active and exhibits a wide range of eruptive styles, from gentle degassing to effusive eruptions to violent, explosive paroxysms. Since 2015, Fuego has displayed a repeating cycle of activity (~30 days per cycle) in which summit explosions increase in intensity, and are eventually accompanied by lava effusion before a paroxysm occurs. Through analysis of data obtained from ground-based thermal infrared remote sensing, I am attempting to determine possible trigger mechanisms for Fuego's paroxysms. Theoretically, a better understanding of trends in volcanic behaviour will inform hazard mitigation measures in surrounding communities that are vulnerable to Fuego's activity.
