Research interests

My research interests are in qualitative health services research, often embedded within complex clinical trials.  I'm located within the Musculoskeletal Research Unit in the Bristol Medical School, Translational Health Sciences, University of Bristol. I am lead for the unit's Qualitative Musculoskeletal Research Group, which conducts qualitative research across a number of projects in orthopaedic and rheumatological research.

I currently lead the qualitative work on two surgical NIHR programme grants: The INFORM (Infection and Orthopaedic Management) programme - a study of surgical treatment of infection after joint replacement and the STAR (Study of Treatment After Replacement) programme - a study of post-operative prevention and management of chronic pain after total knee replacement. I am also involved in the design and conduct of qualitative research on a number of projects within rheumatological conditions, obstetrics safety, pulmonary, and cardiac medicine. I supervise a number of NIHR doctoral fellowships, PhDs and MD projects.

My research has focussed on chronic pain and osteoarthritis within both primary and secondary care; orthopaedic surgery and adverse outcomes following joint arthroplasty; physical activity and ageing; space and place and its effect on health and wellbeing; palliative care and complementary therapies.

I have methodological expertise in designing and conducting qualitative research alongside complex clinical trials, and analytic methods including thematic analysis, hermeneutic phenomenological analysis, longitudinal and framework analysis. I have conducted research and/or worked in a broad range of health care settings including primary, secondary, tertiary and voluntary care.
