My current project (Dec 2017 - ) examines the intellectual legacy of the AHRC's Connected Communities programme, working with Prof Keri Facer in the School of Education.

Before moving to Bristol in December 2017, I worked on a large-grant Connected Communities project called Stories of Change: Exploring energy and community in the past, present and future (2014-2017), holding posts at the Open University and the University of Bath. This wide-ranging interdisciplinary project aimed to generate more open and plural public debate around our changing relationship with energy. I recently carried out ethnographic work aimed at understanding the lived experience of energy use in deprived areas, for Building capacity for energy resilience in deprived areas, a Centre for Sustainable Energy/University of Bath project.

My background is in English literature, and my research often centres on the examination of narratives and metaphors in various discourses. In the past, this has included considering these devices in popular science writing on evolutionary biology, genetics and quantum mechanics (for my PhD thesis); in fiction and non-fiction writing on climate change; and in fictions of our energy futures. More recently I have published an ecocritical reading of the procedural rhetorics of computer games; and on the importance of speculation in the Energy Humanities.
