Charlotte's initial research began in the area of cancer genetics completing her PhD funded by the Leukaemia Research Fund in 2005. Her thesis investigated whether cytokine gene polymorphisms influence predisposition or susceptibility to B cell lymphoma's and multiple myeloma.

Charlotte went onto work for the Cancer Research UK and the Department of Health funded CAP (Cluster randomised triAl of testing for Prostate cancer) trial which evaluated the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of population screening (PSA testing) for prostate cancer, which involved over 430,000 men in the UK.

In 2014 Charlotte began working on interventions to improve the diagnosis of HIV in Primary care, this led to her co-ordinating a pilot randomised controlled trial of a GP educational intervention to increase HIV testing in high HIV prevalence general practices in Bristol.

Recently Charlotte started working within the Bristol Centre for Surgical Research on the BraveR study, which is investigating methods to develop and deliver better research to improve outcomes and inform practice in breast reconstruction following mastectomy for breast cancer. Charlotte began working at Bristol University in 1998 and has worked in Population Health Sciences at the Bristol Medical School since 2007.
