Research interests

Dr Murphy's research and teaching interests lie in the relationship between collective power and individual rights and the role that law plays in that relationship. His current writing focuses on the dynamics of transnational law and their impact on legality and will lead to a monograph, Control Beyond the State, to be published in 2017.

In 2016 he was convenor of the IACL Terrorism Research Group Annual Conference: Accountability for Transnational Counter-terrorism Operations. A collection based, in part, on the conference’s proceedings will be published in 2017. Dr Murphy is also editing the Elgar Research Collection in Transnational Law, with David D. Caron, for publication later this year.

Dr Murphy’s first monograph, EU Counter-terrorism Law: Pre-emption & the Rule of Law, won the SLS Birks Prize for Outstanding Legal Scholarship (Second Prize) in 2013, with an expanded edition published in 2015. In 2014 Dr Murphy published, with Diego Acosta Arcarazo, EU Security and Justice Law: After Lisbon and Stockholm.

Support for Dr Murphy’s research has come from the Arts & Humanities Research Council, the National University of Ireland, the Modern Law Review, the EU Framework Programme 7, the Fulbright Commission and the British Academy. A selection of his research publications can be found on SSRN
