Research interests

My interests lie in using evidence synthesis methods and "big data" from national and international sources to inform cost-effectiveness models. I am chief investigator of two NIHR grants using these methods to determine the cost-effectiveness of multiple types of hip and knee implants. I collaborate with national and international registries to extend the evidence base for transnational economic models and inform decision-making and comissioning of services in the UK and beyond.

I also lead the economic evaluation components of twelve other NIHR funded studies including within-trial economic evaluations, in collaboration with external UK institutions. Recent clinical areas I have worked on include orthopaedic surgery of the hip, knee, and ankles; rheumatology; stroke; and children with cronic conditions.

I am a Regional Advisory Panel member for the NIHR Research for Patient Benefit programme - Southwest board, and a former consultant for the Research Design Service. I also peer-review grant proposals for all NIHR funding schemes.

I am the short course organiser for three courses in the Population Health Sciences department short course programme on economic evaluation and multiple imputation methods to deal with missing data. I also teach a range of undergradute and post-graduate courses on health economics and health care financing at University of Bristol and abroad.

I have a PhD in economics, having studied general economic theory, finance and international economics in the USA. My dissertation looked at economic growth models and the (endogenous) influence of population growth on economic growth.
