My research concentrates on the epidemiology and treatment of CFS/ME.

I lead research using the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) to investigate the prevalence of and risk factors for CFS/ME at ages 13, 15 and 18. We have completed work on the prevalence of CFS/ME at 13, 15 and 18 and the natural history. We are finishing analyses investigating which factors predict the development of CFS/ME. Simon Collin now runs the CFS/ME National Outcomes Database, which collects assessment and outcome data from 26 adult and 4 paediatric teams across England. This is the largest CFS/ME disease register in the world, with assessment data on more than 7000 adults and 1500 children with CFS/ME. It provides the infrastructure for a variety of projects in children and adults. In addition to epidemiological studies we conduct qualitative studies and systematic reviews.

We have currently recruiting into two trials, the MAGENTA trial which is investigating the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of Graded Exercise Therapy and the FITNET-NHS trial which is investigating the effectiveness and cost effectiveness of internet delivered CBT.

For information on FITNET-NHS please see http://www.bristol.ac.uk/ccah/research/childdevelopmentdisability/chronic-fatigue/fitnet-nhs/

We have finished recruiting into the SMILE trial. For further information please see http://www.bristol.ac.uk/ccah/research/childdevelopmentdisability/chronic-fatigue/smile.html
