My research explores how the expression of genetic information changes in heart disease, how this is regulated by non-coding RNAs, and the impact of these changes on cardiac physiology. I am also interested in how these changes are reflected in non-coding RNAs leaving the heart in the blood circulation, with a view to identifying novel diagnostic or prognostic markers. The main part of my research focuses on these areas in the context of ischaemic heart disease and type 2 diabetes, but I am also developing similar work in cardio-oncology, as cardiac toxicity is a common side effect of certain chemotherapies, or thoracic radiotherapy.
