Research interests

I received my PhD in classics from the University of California at Berkeley in 2007. My much-revised thesis came out as The Birth of Hedonism (Princeton) in 2015. In 2016 I was the Principal Investigator for an international networking grant funded by the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council, which addressed and sought to extend dialogues between ancient Greek and Roman Stoicism and current continental philosophy. I am working now, with collaborators in America and Australia, toward two book-length outputs from that project. Meanwhile I remain intensely interested in questions of agency, identity, and responsibility inspired by philosophical, psychoanalytic, and anthropological approaches to Greek tragedy.

Research Supervision

I'd be particularly enthusiastic about supervising work that combines contemporary continental philosophy or psychoanalysis with ancient Greek and Roman literature, especially philosophy or tragedy.

My teaching ranges from Greek and Latin language and literature at all levels through ancient rhetoric, philosophy, epic and tragic poetry in translation, myth and religion. I also teach a range of modern topics, from the clinical and philosophical aspects of psychoanalysis to cinema, graphic novels, and pop music.
