My background is in mathematics and my main research interests are in using mathematical and statistical modelling to provide solutions to real-life applied problems. As an early-career researcher I have already been able to realize this ambition in academic fields as diverse as fluid mechanics, brain imaging, geophysics, atmospheric chemistry and medical statistics.

In my current role as a Research Associate in Medical Statistics, I am working on the WATCHproject (Wastewater Analysis of Traces of illicit drug-related Chemicals for law enforcement and public Health), a new pan-European collaboration funded by the European Commission.

My primary objective is to interpret and model wastewater data alongside other data sources. This involves investigating the extent of agreement or disagreement between relative amounts of different stimulants or their metabolites in wastewater samples and more traditional epidemiological indicators (e.g. population surveys, the amount of treatment demand, numbers of drug- related deaths).

I will also be to developing a ‘multi-parameter evidence synthesis’ (MPES) model for at least one European city, in which multiple sources of data will be synthesised together to estimate the total ‘size’ of the local stimulant market.
