Dr. Nicola Giordano’s research is focused on the seismic vulnerability, risk and resilience of buildings and infrastructure. Specifically, he investigates how the technical assessments can be translated into economic loss estimations and transferred to different stakeholders such as policy makers, building owners and (re)insurance companies. His research also includes the development of innovative procedures to evaluate the seismic response of unreinforced masonry structures. These activities are the result of a continuous collaboration with different researchers at the Politecnico di Milano and at the University of California Berkeley. Dr. Giordano joined the University of Bristol in 2018 to work on the EPSRC-Global Challenges £1.6M project on the Seismic Safety and Resilience of Schools in Nepal (www.safernepal.net), mainly focusing on the vulnerability assessment of the Nepalese school building stock at territorial scale.

Dr. Giordano has more than five years of professional experience in the industry sector. In 2013, he was involved in consultancy for the Gavio Group S.p.A., one of the largest highway managing operators worldwide. In this project he worked as main developer of a software for the systematic risk assessment of about 1200 bridges of the Italian Highway Network. From 2014 he directly participated to the post-earthquake reconstruction the city of L’Aquila (Italy). He was a project team member in the rebuilding and retrofitting of the Basilica di Collemaggio, one of the most iconic Romanesque architecture in Italy (client: ENI S.p.A.). A high proportion of Dr. Giordano’s experience has been in base isolation design of industrial plants, static asseveration of residential buildings, structural rehabilitation of reinforced concrete structures, materials quality production control and forensic engineering consultancy.

In the last years Dr. Giordano lectured at the Postgraduate Professional Masters of the F.lli Pesenti School at the Politecnico di Milano and was invited to lecture at the Saint Petersburg State Polytechnic University (Russia). His research activity has been presented in several international conferences and technical papers.

Dr. Giordano holds a Doctor of Philosophy with honors in Architecture, Build Environment and Construction Engineering from Politecnico di Milano (2018) with a focus on probabilistic performance based seismic assessment. Part of his Ph.D. research was developed thanks to a collaboration with the PEER – Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center at the University of California Berkeley, where he worked for one year. Additionally, he holds a Master of Science with laude in Civil Structural Engineering (2013) and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (2011), both from Politecnico di Milano. Dr. Giordano is a P.E. and member of the Milan Order of Engineers.
