Research interests

I have a broad interest in the use of qualitative methods within health services research, specialising in the application of these methods within randomised controlled trials (RCTs) to improve informed consent and recruitment. I have used qualitative methods to extend understanding of the barriers to recruitment, building these findings into flexible training packages to support staff who recruit patients to RCTs. I also use a range of qualitative methods more broadly to illuminate and address issues beyond recruitment in feasibility studies for the successful design and implementation of a full-scale RCT. I currently work within the MRC ConDuCT-II (COllaboration and iNnovation in DifficUlt or complex randomised Controlled Trials In Invasive procedures) Hub to develop methodological research in trial recruitment, and I have been an active member of the Qualitative research Integrated within Trials (QuinteT) team since its inception, developing research and training activities to improve the design and conduct of RCTs. I am the RCT recruitment training lead for the QuinteT group, co-lead for the School’s short course on Qualitative Research in Randomised Trials and an Associate Editor for Trials journal.
