Research interests

Rutvica's research interests focus mainly on the impact of labour migration, national state power, and gendered division of labour on work and employment practices.

Currently, Rutvica is leading a research project entitled The Future of Labour in Europe in China-led Globalisation. A Case Study of Foxconn. Developed in collaboration with Dr Devi Sacchetto from University of Padua, Italy, the project investigates the global firms and the raise of China, and studies the ways in which ‘Chinese’ modes of production and management are impacting on work and employment relations in Europe. The project speaks to the academic community but also to practitioners such as policy makers, trade unions and NGOs. To this end, Rutvica co-edited a volume Flexible workforces and low profit margins: electronics assembly between Europe and China available for free download at the ETUI website as well as a policy brief produced by PolicyBristol

Rutvica has published widely on the impact of migration on labour relations and labour markets, with particular emphasis on gender and sexuality. Her research monograph Agency, Migration and Citizenship in Sex Trafficking (Palgrave, 2010) focuses on the informal recruitment practices such as those in human trafficking and interrogates the link between migration, gendered organisation of the labour markets and citizenship. As part of the Open University led FP7 research project Enacting European Citizenship (2008 - 2011), Rutvica also worked on the political significance of transnational mobility, specifically in relation to European citizenship.
