Research interests

My research interests include material culture, urbanisation, trade, globalism, diffusionism of cultures and harbour archaeology. I am also interested in military archaeology especially in the medieval and post medieval periods.

The main focus for my PhD is to study port communities in Europe between the years 1400-1700. These cities were increasingly connected through trade, contact and culture. I will investigate the driving forces behind the transformation of cities in the Early Modern period and see if this was due to processes linked to culture and exchange. I will also study the effect of capitalism, commercialism and globalism on these cities and the wider implications of these networks as seen through harbour urbanisation. The Project aims to inform on how European cities were transformed into Early Modern metropoles and became interconnected to the global world. Thus, this topic is directly relevant to our society today, as we face social, political, economic and environmental challenges arising from our global connectivity and urban pressures.
