Research interests

I am currently pursuing my PhD through the Augustine Heard Studentship, under the supervsion of Prof. Robert Bickers, and Dr. Grace Huxford. My research focuses on Anglo-American relations in nineteenth-century China, and how trade competition between the respective communities influenced the development of Hong Kong society. This project draws upon transnational contexts to investigate the extent to which expatriates in Hong Kong were influenced by domestic events and colonial circumstances.

My research interests broadly include the study of class, society, and culture in late-imperial/early-republican China's treaty port communities, with previous research investigating the lives of non-elite Westerners in Shanghai. I am also interested in questions of contact, and how the colonial setting affected the interactions between multinational expatriates and local Chinese populations.
