Research interests

I research and publish on modern and contemporary poetry in English.  I also write poetry (my collection You Have a Visitor is published by Worple Press. www.worplepress.com).

I am interested in receiving research proposals on modern and contemporary poetry and poetics.

I am currently producing an annotated edition of the Selected Poems of Walter de la Mare and have recently been writing and researching on de la Mare along with other Georgian poets including Edward Thomas and Rupert Brooke.  My book The Alvarez GenerationThom Gunn, Geoffrey Hill, Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath and Peter Porter (Liverpool University Press, 2015) is on the generation of poets who succeeded the Movement.  Other recent research includes work on the neo-romantics (Dylan Thomas, Vernon Watkins, George Barker and W.S. Graham), and on Philip Larkin.  I have also been a frequent book reviewer for publications including the Guardian, the London Review of Books, Poetry Review and the Times Literary Supplement.  My PhD was on the long poems of David Jones, Basil Bunting, Geoffrey Hill and Roy Fisher.  I have also researched into the history of Penguin books, co-editing and contributing to Reading Penguin (Cambridge Scholars 2013).  Poems of mine have appeared in magazines including New Walk, PN Review, Poetry Review, Rialto the Spectator and the Times Literary Supplement
