PRISM: Platform for Road and Infrastructure Slope Management (GCRF pump-priming project)

AcronymPRISM
StatusFinished
Period1/03/1831/07/18

Description

Rainfall-triggered landslides are increasing in tropical developing countries due to rapid urbanisation and road construction. Hillside communities experience frequent ‘everyday disasters’ while larger storms cause hundreds of landslides that block lifeline roads, hinder disaster response and reverse economic growth. Conventional landslide assessment and engineering approaches are often not transferable to such data- and resource-limited contexts. This project will create the innovative specification for PRISM by field testing, integrating and extending our research with partners in the Caribbean. With future development, PRISM should give engineers and policy-makers throughout the humid tropics the ‘actionable’ knowledge-base needed to anticipate and reduce landslide risk.
