THE POWER OF WASTE: APPLICATIONS OF MICROBIAL FUEL CELL TECHNOLOGY IN LIVESTOCK AGRICULTURE

Description

This project will provide an opportunity for an interdisciplinary exchange of ideas between researchers interested in greener, more sustainable livestock agriculture. In particular, the brain-storm session will seek to identify processes and inflection points in livestock farms and abattoirs where Microbial Fuel Cell technology could be applied and harnessed to improve waste management. In doing so, the ultimate end is to improve the environmental footprint of livestock farming, lower the cost of production and develop innovative, better ways of farming. Both UK and small, subsistence livestock farmers in low and middle income countries would benefit from these applications. These transformations would further become actual, feasible and viable enablers of the interconnected challenge of farming well, eating well and living well.
The brain-storm session will include a series of presentations from MFC and farm animal veterinary scientists and a visit to the farm and abattoir, which are assets of Bristol Veterinary School.
A facilitator will support participants in their discussions, at the end of which there will be a list of scoped ideas with a timeline for next steps and a lead champion each.

Layman's description

Microbial Fuel Cell technology is a process by which organic waste can be turned into electricity which can then bu used to power lights and robots for example. This technology is an environmental win win, because at the same time as dealing with waste in a greener fashion, it also produces power in a cleaner way. Microbial fuel Cell technology is being used to light human toilets but there are other places where it could be used, including livestock farms and abattoirs, where considerable waste is produced and is very expensive to dispose off.
This project will bring together experts in Microbial Fuel Cell technology and farm animal veterinary scientists to learn from each other and develop ideas to use the technology in livestock farms and abbatoirs.
At the end of the day, the participants will have a defined list of ideas and a plan to make them happen.
