Abstract

This article is a study of the commonplace anecdote of the death of Pliny the Elder and considers in particular the way in which writers in emergent vernacular genres used the story as a means of promoting particular methodological positions on enquiry into nature. It combines literary history, original bibliographical research and the history of disciplines.
