In this chapter we argue (1) that Walter Pater's reading of Platonism can make a philosophically interesting contribution to today's debates about Platonism and about ethics in general, and (2) that it does so precisely through Pater's integration of Tylorian anthropology. In short, Pater reads Platonism as a form of animism, which both gives structure to the Platonic life and meaning to the Platonic life-world.
