Abstract

Having recently published an article on Theodor Bibliander's Machumetis Saracenorum ... (1543), I will use this presentation to look at a wider array of writings from Zurichers on the 'Turk.' Zwingli did not, of course, publish on Islam but appears to have adopted a view not dissimilar to that of John of Damascus that Islam is essentially a heretical sect. I will examine the views of his protege, Heinrich Bullinger, in works such as Gegen die Teilnahme am Türkenzug (1532) and In Apocalypsim ... (1557), and Der Turgg (1567) against the backdrop of Luther and Calvin's writings as well as those of various Roman Catholics.
