Abstract

This chapter reports on the development and initial investigation of a new C-test for Turkish. By contrast with the minimal existing research on Turkish C-tests, which has focused on bilingual speakers, this study attempted to develop a Turkish C-test that would be effective in distinguishing different proficiency levels of Turkish foreign language learners. Interagency Language Roundtable (ILR) skill-level descriptions were used in passage selection, to identify different levels of reading texts. The Turkish C-test items were developed based on the second-half deletion method, with several additional accommodations unique to the Turkish language. The test was administered to 37 learners of Turkish at different proficiency levels. Initial analyses indicate that the resulting assessment was quite reliable, and it was capable of accurately distinguishing multiple proficiency levels.
