Abstract

Diffraction is known to have a major influence on the propagation performance of a wireless communications link especially in lower frequency bands and hence the diffraction in millimetre wave band needs to be emphasized. In this paper, we propose a single material characterisation measurement in a controlled indoor environment at the centre frequency of 40GHz. In addition, measurement results are presented in three distinct regions, line of sight (LOS), penumbra and umbra for a more comprehensible observation. Different materials with approximately same dimension are tested. The movement of the material under test through a direct ray path is investigated. Analysis shows that concrete experiences the greatest attenuation compared to other materials under test. The proposed results show significant agreement with the Knife Edge Diffraction theory. It also can be concluded that there is a significant diffracted field in umbra regions.
