This article is the first study of the French translation of Pliny the Elder's Historia Naturalis, a vastly influential text in the sixteenth century, and therefore makes a significant and original contribution to our understanding of the period's attitudes to this canonical classical text. The article locates the translation in relation to the various traditions of reading Pliny, provides new documentary evidence on the translator, and then argues, via close reading of the detail of the translation, for its distinctive mode of responding to the NH's generic and epistemological tendencies.
